Obtaining medical insurance in Spain is often prompted by the need for coverage during pregnancy and childbirth.
Even women who solely rely on the public healthcare system in Spain may opt to secure private insurance before childbirth. This decision is driven by the desire for maximum comfort and choice regarding healthcare providers, delivery facilities, private delivery rooms, and the birthing process itself. Public clinics often have limited options, and not all offer private rooms.
Paying for prenatal care and childbirth at a private clinic in Spain can be expensive, given the country's relatively high medical costs. On average, private childbirth in Spain costs around 5,000 euros, with a cesarean section costing approximately from 8,000 euros. Given the multitude of expenses expectant parents face, obtaining private medical insurance, which covers not only prenatal care and childbirth but also other medical services, proves to be more beneficial.
Key considerations when obtaining private medical insurance in Spain for prenatal care and childbirth include:
- It's advisable to secure the policy during the pregnancy planning phase.
- The waiting period for childbirth when obtaining a new policy is typically 8 months from the policy's start date.
- For those already pregnant without private insurance and unable to meet the waiting period, insurance companies like DKV offer solutions.
- Additional coverage for childbirth can be obtained up to the 24th week of pregnancy.
Two types of additional coverage are available:
1. Prenatal care only, priced at 800 euros. This coverage encompasses all necessary tests except for non-invasive prenatal genetic testing.
2. Prenatal care and childbirth, priced at 3,000 euros for mainland Spain residents and 3,500 euros for those in the island regions. This comprehensive coverage includes all necessary tests, including non-invasive prenatal genetic testing for high-risk cases, as well as childbirth.
The process of obtaining additional coverage for prenatal care and childbirth involves:
- First, obtaining the primary medical policy.
- Then, requesting the chosen additional coverage, accompanied by a medical report from a gynecologist regarding the pregnancy status.
- Following the review of the request and medical report, the insurance company issues an invoice for payment, which must be settled in a single payment.
- Once payment is received, the coverage becomes effective.
Private medical insurance in Spain covers essential appointments with doctors, tests, ultrasounds, prenatal monitoring, and all medical aspects of childbirth. This includes services provided by gynecologists, anesthesiologists, delivery rooms, hospital rooms, and the initial examination of the newborn by a pediatrician. However, non-medical services such as birthing in a bathtub, with music, or with a doula's assistance are not covered by DKV or other insurance providers.
